Jamaican green banana porridge typically has dairy cow’s condensed milk but this recipe includes a dairy free version made from coconut milk! Plus, if you’re down on time and don’t want to make your own condensed milk, feel free to just sub equal parts agave syrup. It won’t have that same heart warming taste but it will still be delicious.
Make your own simple 2 ingredient dairy free coconut condensed milk with this recipe.
What is Green Banana Porridge?
Even though Jamaica is a tiny island, it has so many porridge recipes for almost anything you can think of! Plantain, cornmeal, bulgar wheat, hominy corn, and peanut porridges are all just a few to name. My favorite growing up was always Jamaican cornmeal porridge but this mouthwatering green banana porridge is coming in with hot competition!
Jamaican Porridge is simply blending or combining another substance with coconut milk. We will be chopping a few green bananas (I used burro for Dr. Sebi alkaline) and blending with coconut milk. Then, we’ll add that to a pot of boiling water along with a few other spices. Its a very simple dish but makes for such a holistic and nourishing yardie breakfast.

How to make Jamaican Green Banana Porridge
Step One:
Pour the water into your pot and bring to a boil. While that is preparing, largely chop 3 green bananas and blend with the coconut milk.
Step Two:
Once the water is boiling, add the liquified banana milk mixture into the pot. Be sure to slowly stir this in until everything is well combined. Add in the rest of the dry aromatics and vanilla. Close the pot and allow to cook for the next 10 – 15 minutes.
Step Three:
At the end, sweeten the pot with the condensed milk. Taste to see if any spices are needed for adjustments. Serve with some Jamaican water crackers (or not, you do you) and enjoy!
Tips for making Green Banana Porridge
Due to adding 2 cups of coconut milk, my porridge was nice, creamy, and silky. However, there are people that like their porridge a bit more thick. If this is you, add only 1 or 1.5 cups of coconut milk opposed to adding the full 2 cups. However, adjusting the liquid content ratio will make the spices be a bit overbearing.
Jamaican porridges are signatures by sweetening with condensed milk. Use my recipe of coconut condensed milk to make the recipe authentic. If not used, it will still be delicious but won’t taste as authentic.
How to store Green Banana Porridge
Jamaican Green Banana Porridge is perfect for meal prep! It can last in the fridge for up to 5 days and up to 2.5 weeks if frozen well in the freezer. When you’re ready to re-heat, simply warm on the stove or microwave. There will be no need to thin out with extra coconut milk like cornmeal porridge when reheating.
