You’ve heard of the classic American breakfast side of grated potato but have you ever tried a green banana hash brown? I first tried this when I was living in east Africa when a friend made hash browns from green banana and it was so delicious and reminded me of the Caribbean! Today, we’re going to learn how to make an alkaline green banana hash brown using burro bananas.

What is an alkaline diet?

First things first. You may be asking Tiff, what does alkaline mean? An alkaline diet consists of foods that are above a pH level of 7. Many of those on a fully alkaline diet follow the teachings of the great Ancestor Dr. Sebi. He was an Afro-Honduran who discovered a cure for nearly every dis-ease and created a list of fruits, veggies, nuts, legumes to eat and those to stay away from. *Heads up: This recipe includes garlic which is not alkaline. Simply omit to enjoy a fully alkaline and delicious breakfast* (:

Common bananas that are typically enjoyed around the western world are man made hybrids and do not contain seeds. Even unripe green bananas loved by Jamaicans and Caribbeans alike. For alkaline vegans from the islands, burro bananas are a great replacement. While I am not fully alkaline, I love to incorporate meals, vegetables, and fruits with a high pH whenever I can and see fit. Don’t worry at all if you can’t find burro bananas, the recipe will still be just as delicious with regular green bananas and include many healing properties.

What you’ll need – Alkaline green banana hashbrown

This recipe is incredibly simple yet so tasty! All that is needed is 3 ingredients.

2 unripe green burro bananas with garlic and onion
  • Green Burro Banana (use regular green banana for non alkaline)
  • Onion
  • Garlic (omit for alkaline)
  • Grape seed oil (alkaline in natural, can be subbed for avocado oil)

How to make alkaline green banana hash brown

1. Cut off both ends of the green banana and make an incision down the middle. Carefully peel away the skin.

2. Carefully grater the banana. *Optional* I like to use a nut milk bag to squeeze out an excess liquid the bananas may carry but this is not mandatory. In a small bowl, add some salt as it will act as a squeezer and naturally draw any liquid that may linger. Grab a quality nut milk bag here.

3. In a pan of hot grape seed oil, sautéed the onion and garlic until fragrant (about 2 minutes). Add in the grated green banana.

4. Season with Black pepper and pink Himalayan salt. Flatten the hash brown with a spatula and allow to cook on each side for about 5 minutes. Scramble every so often to ensure all sides properly cook and become crispy.

5. Serve right off the stove and enjoy!

How to store alkaline green banana hash brown

Green Banana hash browns are best served right off the stove! If meal prep is necessary, it may be best to allow to cool to room temperature. Then, freeze in plastic baggies for up to 2 weeks. To re-warm heat a bit of grape seed oil in a pan, sautéed until heated and crispy and enjoy!

A fun (and delicious) Caribbean twist on the classic American breakfast. Instead of the traditional potato, try this delicious and alkaline green banana hash brown and switch up your usual breakfast routine.

Ingredients

Alkaline Green Banana Hash Browns

  • 2 Burro Bananas, sub for regular green banana if burro can't be found
  • 1/2 Red Onion or Shallot, Sliced very thin
  • 3 Cloves Garlic, grated, omit for alkaline
  • 1/4 Black Pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Pink Himalayan Salt, to taste
  • Grape seed oil, sub avocado oil

Method

Instructions

  • 1)

Cut off both ends of the green banana and make an incision down the middle. Carefully peel away the skin.

  • 2)

Carefully grater the banana. *Optional* I like to use a nut milk bag to squeeze out an excess liquid the bananas may carry but this is not mandatory. In a small bowl, add some salt to the grated hash brown as it will act as a squeezer and naturally draw any liquid that may linger.

  • 3)

In a pan of hot grape seed oil, sautéed the onion and garlic until fragrant (about 2 minutes). Add in the grated green banana.

  • 4)

Season with Black pepper and pink Himalayan salt. Flatten the hash brown with a spatula and allow to cook on each side for about 5 minutes. Scramble every so often to ensure all sides properly cook and become crispy.

Notes

  • Garlic is not alkaline! Feel free to omit for a fully alkalising breakfast (:
  • BE sure to put the salt directly on the raw grated green banana so draw out extra moisture and ensure crispness when pain frying.
