Let’s make this simple but absolutely delicious matcha affogato at home! I’ve had this dessert at a restaurant before for quite a hefty price, and it is so easy and decadent to make in your own kitchen!

Typically made with a shot of espresso, this matcha affogato is earthy, creamy, and perfectly sweet.

You can either choose to eat the ice cream immediately with a spoon, or allow it to melt for a nice, cold matcha latte! However you decide to eat this matcha affogato, you’re sure to love it if you love matcha as much as I do.

In a more un-traditional way, you can use banana ice cream to have a banana pudding matcha latte feel. This recipe is so easy and flexible and easily catered towards your wants.

What is an Affogato?

Affogato is a simple, yet incredibly mouthwatering, dessert consisting of two ingredients: ice cream and espresso. It is typically made by pouring a hot espresso shot over creamy vanilla ice cream. It’s a straightforward yet highly enjoyable dessert made for coffee lovers.

Matcha affogato is created the exact same way as the regular version, but using a shot of matcha instead of coffee.

What You’ll Need

vanilla ice cream with matcha shot
  • Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder
  • High quality vanilla ice cream
  • Chasen (matcha whisk)
  • Chawan (matcha bowl)

How to make Matcha Affogato

Step One:

Soak your chasen (whisk) in hot water for at least 2 minutes. This will help to soften the bristles so that they don’t break easily.

Step Two:

Measure out one teaspoon of a high quality matcha and put it into your chawan (matcha bowl). Once your whisk has soaked for long enough, pour in 1/2 of the warm water you have (not boiling) into the bowl.

Step Three:

Start to stir in a circle rotation to get all the clumps out. A nice thick paste should have formed by now.

Now, pour in the rest of the water and start to whisk in an M motion for about 45 seconds. Pour in another 1/2 tablespoon if your matcha shot is too thick for your liking. The matcha shot will be ready once there is a small micro foam at the top layer.

Step Four:

Scoop the ice cream into your favorite glass. Slowly pour the matcha shot into the ice cream and enjoy immediately!

Notes for making Matcha Affogato

  • Use a high quality, creamy matcha powder! I have tried using a more bitter culinary grade matcha during this recipe and it made the over all taste a but too bitter for me.
  • Use your best and favorite ice cream. I mean, this recipe is two ingredients after all!
