What is Callaloo?

Callaloo is a leafy green found all over the Caribbean that is extremely high in iron. In Jamaica, its typically steamed/sauteed and served with saltfish alongside ackee and boiled food.

However, callaloo is very nutritious and versatile and can be made into different recipes! Callaloo fritters are definitely not traditional but they use traditional ingredients in a unique way.

What You’ll need- Jamaican Callalloo Fritters

  • Callaloo
  • Jamaican All Purpose
  • Paprika
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Onion
  • Scotch Bonnet
  • Bell Pepper
  • Thyme
  • Flour
  • Garlic Cloves
  • Scallion
  • Salt
  • Water

How to make Jamaican Callaloo Fritters

Step One:

Chop the garlic, onion, scallion, bell pepper, and garlic into small pieces. Remove ALL the seeds from the scotch bonnet and de-stem the thyme and finely dice these as well.

Step Two:

Combine the chopped herbs with the flour, dry seasonings, cooked callaloo and SLOWLY pour over the water. You may need more or less so be mindful!

**If using canned callaloo, rinse and completely dry the greens before adding to the fritter mixture.

Mix the ingredients together until a sticky, thick batter has formed. The batter should not be runny as all and should hold together and kind of look like the flour is simply sticking to the calllaoo.

Step Three:

Heat a pan with oil and measure 2 tablespoons of batter. Form into a flat sheet/oval shape and gently drop into the oil. Allow each side to fry for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown on side.

How to store Jamaican Callaloo Fritters

Callaloo fritters are best stored in the freezer! Wait until they completely cool down, then store in a freezer safe baggie for 2-3 weeks.

When you’re ready to reheat, set your oven or air fryer to 400 F 204 C for less than 20 minutes until they’re hot and crispy once again and enjoy!
