This fonio porridge recipe is packed with health benefits, takes less than 10 minutes to make, and is super creamy!
Although Fonio is not found on the island, today’s fonio porridge recipe will be done Jamaican style. I wanted to have a unique and delicious combination of West African ingredients prepared in a Caribbean way!
What is Fonio?
Fonio is an ancient grain originating from west Africa that has been used for thousands of years. Its super light and fluffy and a great, nutrient dense replacement for rice!
Fonio cooks extremely quickly which is why I love it as a breakfast porridge option. In my opinion, it provides a lot more health benefits compared to an oatmeal porridge.
Health Benefits of Fonio Porridge
A fully gluten free grain, fonio is loaded with nutrients. It is packed with essential amino acids to help with overall health. Fonio also contains a great amount of fiber that may help to promote a healthy gut.
This ancient west African grain also contains a good amount of iron and is a great low glycemic replacement to regular white rice.
What you’ll need
- Fonio
- Coconut Milk
- Vanilla
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Dairy Free Condensed Milk
How to make Fonio Porridge
Step One:
Pour your all of your ingredients into a pot except the condensed milk. Allow this to cook on medium-low heat for the next 3-5 minutes.
Step Two:
Fonio does not take long to cook at all, do not leave the stove. Once the porridge has thickened, Sweeten to taste with your coconut condensed milk.
Step Three:
Serve with fruit of choice and enjoy!
How to store Fonio Porridge
Fonio porridge can store well in the fridge for about 3 days. I would say not to store much longer, especially since this porridge cooks so quickly and easily!
When you’re ready to re-heat, simply add a splash of milk of choice, reheat on the stove or microwave, and enjoy!

Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Fonio measured dry
- 2 Cups Coconut Milk more or less, to taste
- 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
- 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg

- 1 Bay leaf small
