The lesser known sibling to matcha, priced much more affordably and has less caffeine, hojicha lattes have been the star in my kitchen for a while now!

This hojicha latte recipe has the perfect combination of nutty and roasted flavor for a delicious and comforting latte.

What is Hojicha?- Hojicha Latte Recipe

Hojicha is matcha that has been roasted along with some twigs and stems. Hojicha’s flavor profile greatly varies from match in that is has a robust roasted flavour along with slight caramel and nutty notes.

What I especially love about hojicha is its budget friendly price point. For example, 100 grams of high quality first harvest (ceremonial grade) matcha from my favorite brand Rockys is priced between $100 – $130. Whereas my favorite hojicha is priced at $22 for the same amount!

The potent brownish green tea powder has just as many health benefits as matcha– if not more! Hojicha contains low amounts of caffeine so this drink can be enjoyed any time of day.

Like matcha, hojicha is also high in antioxidants and something called L-theanine which may help with anxiety and can provide a calm effect.

What you’ll need

  • Hojicha Powder- Each hojicha is created differently. Some are more roasted and others are Moree nutty. This powder from Sumire is my all time favorite and I drink a cup every night before going o bed to help with digestion, grab your pack here!
  • Plant Milk- Be sure to stay away from milks that may over power the taste of hojicha such as oat milk. My favourite milk for hojicha is either almond or cashew milk.
  • Agave- Or any sweetener of your choice. Condensed Milk is also delicious!
  • Warm Water

How to make an Iced Hojicha Latte

Step One:

Prepare some water in a kettle, aiming for a temperature at 175 F or 79 C. The water should not be boiling or too hot. While the water is warming up, sift out the hojicha powder into your bowl.

Place your matcha whisk into a cup of hot water (do not fully submerge the whisk!) so that the bristles can soften. Discard the water after 1-3 minutes.

Step Two:

Pour in 1 tbs of water into the sifted hojicha and stir in an O motion until a paste forms. Now, pour in the rest of the water switch over the whisking to a W motion going back and forth until a microfilm has formed on the top layer. This will take about 60 seconds.

Step Three:

If making a hot latte, warm your milk and combine with sweetener of choice and the hojicha shot.

If making an iced latte, grab your favorite glass, pour in agave and ice, and the milk. Slowly pour the hojicha shot, aiming for an ice cube so that pretty and visible layers form. Stir the sweetener, milk , and hojicha with a straw and enjoy!
