Equipment

  • 1 Matcha Whisk aka chasen, can also use a frother
  • 1 Matcha Bowl aka chawan
  • Kettle
  • 1 Strainer for sifting out clumps

Ingredients

  • 1.5 Teaspoons Hojicha Powder aka 3 grams, my recommended is linked in article!
  • 1/2 + Cup Plant Milk I use a combo of cashew & almond
  • 1.5+ Teaspoons Agave can put more or less, adjust to your taste
  • 3 Tablespoons Warm Water separated into 1 & 2 tablespoons, never hot/boiling

Instructions

  • Prepare some water in a kettle, aiming for a temperature at 175 F or 79 C. The water should not be boiling or too hot. While the water is warming up, sift out the hojicha powder into your bowl.
Place your matcha whisk into a cup of hot water (do not fully submerge the whisk!) so that the bristles can soften. Discard the water after 1-3 minutes.
  • Pour in 1 tbs of water into the sifted hojicha and stir in an O motion until a paste forms. Now, pour in the rest of the water switch over the whisking to a W motion going back and forth until a microfilm has formed on the top layer. This will take about 60 seconds.
  • If making a hot latte, warm your milk and combine with sweetener of choice and the hojicha shot.
If making an iced latte, grab your favorite glass, pour in agave and ice, and the milk. Slowly pour the hojicha shot, aiming for an ice cube so that pretty and visible layers form. Stir the sweetener, milk , and hojicha with a straw and enjoy!
