In Jamaica, we solve all our problems with herbal tea, more specifically fresh ginger tea. This easy and simple tea is very medicinal and is incredibly easy to make.
When shopping for fresh ginger, I always ge the smallest roots I can find. They tend to be stronger and more potent. The larger ginger hands are usually very water, filled with GMOs, and often not organic.
The quality of your ginger will always determine how your ginger tea will taste!
Health Benefits of Fresh Ginger
Ginger is a root that can be found mostly everywhere in the world but its health benefits are endless!
Apart from being extremely anti-inflammatory, ginger may help to provide comfort to an upset stomach due to its properties that reduce inflammation and bloating.
Ginger is also perfect for including into your diet when you want to boost your immunity. I always love to batch make ginger shots when I’m about to travel so I can prepare my body for the germs I might encounter. Check out this ginger turmeric wellness shot recipe.
Due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties, ginger may also help to provide relief to ache-y muscles. I also love to consume ginger tea to relieve pain from my menstrual cycle.
How to make fresh ginger tea
Step One:
Grab your thumb of ginger and carefully grater it. The ginger can of course be cut into small pieces but I find grating to be easier, fast, and makes the tea richer and more potent.
Step Two:
Place your grated ginger and water into a small sauce pan and turn on the heat to medium-low. Once the water reached just above a boil, immediately turn off the heat.
Allow this to sit for about 10 – 15 minutes. Strain the ginger granules and enjoy!
What Else to add to Fresh ginger tea
Ginger is a wonderful base for a herbal tea and can truly make such a strong medicinal drink when paired with other elements!
Here are a few other items I typically like to add to my fresh ginger tea and the health benefits they provide.
- Lemon– A classic! Adding a but of lemon juice to this tea will not only kick up the flavor but provide added health benefits. How much to add: 1 wedge squeezed.
- Turmeric– Anti-inflamatory just like ginger, turmeric is a powerhouse of nutrients. How much to add: 1 tsp (with a pinch of black pepper to activate)
- Cayenne– This may help to sooth stomachs and does wonders for male stamina/libido. How much to add: Just a pinch!
- Fresh Thyme- I love adding fresh thyme to my ginger tea! Combining this with freshly grated ginger not only adds a coral note, but may also help to fight against colds and coughs. How much to add: 3 fresh stems.
- Honey- Honey is anti-viral, rich with antioxidants, may help to boost the immune system, and a is delicious natural sweetener! How much to add: about 2-3 teaspoons.
- Key Lime– An alkaline Dr. Sebi approved alternative to regular lemons. How much to add: 1 squeezed key lime.
- Cinnamon– I always use a simple combination of cinnamons sticks and grated ginger to help ease period pains when I’m on my menstrual cycle. How much to add: 1 & a half sticks.
- Peppermint- Peppermint ginger is a popular tea mix in Jamaica. It tastes absolutely delicious and may help with coughs. How much to add: about 5 crushed leaves.
