Jamaican peanut porridge is a creamy delight to have for breakfast. It’s protein packed, easy to make, and literally tastes like a warm Caribbean hug. Not to mention this version is completely vegan dairy free!
Jamaican Porridges typically have a good amount of cow’s dairy. Whenever I go out and someone offers porridge, I have to graciously (and sadly) decline as the lactose will rip through my stomach.
Thankfully my peanut porridge version is made 100% dairy free and sweetened with vegan condensed milk making it fully ital vegan and rasta approved.
What is Jamaican Peanut Porridge?
Jamaicans eat a whole heap (a lot) of porridge. It can be plantain, green banana, oats, cornmeal, carrot, hominy corn, and of course peanut. Peanut porridge is made from raw peanuts. These have a different taste from roasted peanuts and what give this porridge it’s unique flavor. However, the taste isn’t for everyone though so I would suggest to try one before proceeding.
What you’ll Need
- Raw Peanuts– The peanuts must be raw in order to make this porridge. They’re typically found in the procure section of groceries stores. Or you can grab some using this link.
- Vegan Condensed Milk– Use my 2 ingredient delicious and easy vegan dairy free coconut condensed milk! Or if you’re feeling lazy, grab a vegan can via this link.
- Oatmeal
- Boiling Water
- Coconut Milk
- Vanilla
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Bay Leaves
How to Make Jamaican Peanut Porridge
Step One:
Allow your raw peanut to soak for 1-2 hours. This step is optional but they will blend much smoother. Meanwhile, set water to boil in a pot along with the bay leaves.
Step Two:
Blend the raw peanuts with oatmeal and coconut milk for no longer than 1 minute. Once the water is boiling, carefully stir in the blended mixture. Add in the cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg and allow to simmer on medium low heat for about 15 minutes.
Be sure to stir every so often so nothing stick to the bottom and the porridge doesn’t get lumpy.
Step Three:
Once cooked, add the vegan condensed milk, stir, and enjoy!
How to store Jamaican Peanut Porridge
Jamaican peanut porridge can be stored up in the fridge for up to 4 days making it great for meal prep! Due to its gel like consistency, I would not recommend freezing for long periods of time.
This is a wonderful breakfast meal for children as it is filled with many nutrients from the coconut milk, oatmeal, and raw peanuts. I always love to start off my day with porridge as it fills me up well and makes me ready to start the day.

I hear peanuts tend to be moldy. Can you substitute with other nuts? Which would you recommend?

Hello Janice! I’ve never seen mold on any peanuts I’ve bought and this recipe requires raw peanuts. I’m not sure if another nut may work but the raw cashews in grocery stores may be an okay substitute. If you try this please let me know how it turns out!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever had porridge before, but I love peanuts and I love warm spices so it sounded good. It was fantastic! I’m so happy I stumbled across your Instagram.
