What is Matcha?
Matcha is a green tea powder that originates in Japan. Matcha actually directly translates to ground tea in Japanese– quite a fitting name isn’t it! Some people say it tastes “grassy” but I think that’s because they might not be drinking a high quality tea.
There are two types of match you can purchase: ceremonial grade and culinary grade. As a staunch matcha lover and someone who has used both kinds, you ALWAYS want to make sure you invest in a good ceremonial matcha.
The main difference is that ceremonial grade is the first harvest from the tea plant whereas culinary grade is the second and sometimes even third harvest. Matcha is a very sensitive plant that has a lot of requirements to grow, so when you purchase a lower grade, you will certainly taste it.
While culinary grade may be good in cookies and other baked goods, it can taste very bitter or even ‘fishy’ in drinks. When I bought a much cheaper culinary grade, I thought I was saving a good buck but ended up hating the fishy taste and weird brown color of the matcha. A quality ceremonial trade matcha might be pricey, but it is for a reason!
Health Benefits of Matcha
Not only does matcha tea tastes absolutely delicious, but it is loaded with health benefits! Packed with anti-oxidants, matcha is a natural caffeinated energy source that doesn’t give you the jitters or anxiety like regular coffee. It may also help to boost your metabolism and reduce stress levels.
Matcha has also been found to possibly aid in bone health, support health brain function, and even possibly even promote heart health! When making matcha the traditional way, you want a small strainer and a bamboo whisk. Put down that electric hand frother!
Grab your matcha bamboo whisk and sifter here!
How to make an iced Strawberry Matcha Latte
Step One:
First, soak your whisk in hot water for a few minutes. While that is soaking, go ahead and sift your matcha powder into a small bowl through a strainer. This step is a MUST as you don’t want any clumps in your drink!
Step Two:
Using warm (NEVER boiling, you don’t want to burn your matcha!!!) water, pour in about 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of water and whisk in an M shape in your bowl for about 60 seconds. You know this match ‘shot’ is ready once you see bubbly foam on the top.
Step Three:
Grab about 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite flavor strawberry Jam (yes, we’re using a strawberry jam because it’s easier and much cheaper than getting real strawberries!) and spread it around the surface of your cup.
Gently place in your ice cubes and pour over your choice of milk (my favourites are pistachio, almond, cashew, or coconut). Now, slowly pour in the matcha and watch the gorgeous colors combine! Get a straw in there and enjoy!
