Clear skin does not have to cost hundreds of dollars or take millions of steps! Many companies promote their expensive products that lowkey do not cause any change and leave people where they started. Or there are tips that call for complicated procedures which end up being very confusing. I’m going to share how I was able to clear my skin and maintain glowy, spotless skin with these 12 natural and easy tips.
How to get clear skin: The personal methods I used
I would like to start by stating I am not a doctor, dermatologist, or medical professional. The content int this article is not meant to replace the advice of a medical professional. These tips are from personal experience; continue to seek consultant from a healthcare professional if skin issues continue to arise.
Clear skin can actually be achieved quite easily if the right measures are taken. Maintaining consistency is so important when it comes to getting clear skin. And of course, healing does not come overnight. Patience is required when we want to have clear skin, its an overall journey.

1. Exercise daily (sweat out toxins)
Exercising is a huge part of having glowing and spotless skin. During workout sessions, sweat is excreted through our pores and glands. That sweat is so important because it is basically toxins leaving out bodies.
Daily exercise is also said to increase the blood flow throughout the body which further helps to remove toxins and promote healthy and clear skin. Even a simple 30 minute walk to start may be enough to start seeing benefits over a period of time.
2. Drink daily green juices for clear skin
Having a fresh fruit and or vegetable juice every day is a key part to my mornings as well as clear skin. Its said breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which is true. But its not necessarily what time we break our fast but what we eat for breakfast.

I tend to practice intermediate fasting when I wake up so that my body has time to process the food I’m about to put into it. I have solid fruits that are high in water content around 11 am.
Before I consume any solid food, I start my day off with a juice. Drinking liquified vegetables and fruits are great for skin because the nutrients are absorbed higher and faster than compared to eating them whole with fiber. I’ve found the more I consume my daily green juices, the better my skin looks.
Here are some delicious, detoxifying, and skin clearing juices:
- Cucumber, mint, apple
- Celery, Pineapple, dandelion, ginger, cucumber
- Kale, cucumber, key lime, apple

3. Maintain frequent bowel movements
This next one may seem a bit strange but going to the bathroom 2-3 times a day also helps to keep my skin clear.
When I was constipated, I had backed up toxins sitting on top of my colon for days. During that period of constipation, pimples and small rashes began to appear all over my face, cheeks, and forehead. I was wondering what was causing the buildup on my face then realised it was my infrequent bowel movements.
Maintain healthy bowel movements (avoiding constipation) can be tricky for some but what may help is drinking more fresh juices, and incorporating more plant based foods.

4. Wash skin once a day. Simplify a skincare routine
I used to think I had to wash my face and scrub really hard in order to have clear skin. Or I was convinced I needed to have a 10 step skincare routine that took an hour out of my day. Turns out, washing my face once a day with African Black soap before going to sleep was more than enough. The thing is, when I would wash my face very often, it got very dry. When skin is dry, it’s more prone to damage from the sun and other enviornmental factors.
When I wake up, I splash and rinse my face with cold water, moisturise, and I’m out the door. Before going to sleep is when I break out the African Black soap, hydrate my skin with rose water and shea butter, and sometimes add a rose oil serum.
The best brand of Black soap and shea butter I’ve found is by a company called Kuza. I’ve used them for many years and had no problem, they’re authentic and Black owned. Grab some natural Black soap bars or shea butter here!
5. Drink more natural teas and herbs for clear skin
Herbal tea tonics are not just good for a “flat belly”! I drink herbal teas almost daily for colon cleanses, full body detoxes, and hydration. I have found the best time for me to drink an herbal tea is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before going to bed. Teas are great for clearing the toxins from my colon, body and skin.
A few natural herbal teas that are great for assisting in clear skin are: green tea, lemon grass tea, lavender tea, ginger tea, dandelion tea, and peppermint tea.
My current favorite company selling prepackaged amazing herbal detox teas is a Black Owned Jamaican Canadian brand call Ancient Herbal Health. Check out their products here!
6. Cut out dairy products
Before I went vegan, I used to work at an ice cream shop and was given a free ice cream cup per shift as an employee. I definitely overdid the free samples because I got extreme cystic acne due to high dairy intake. It took almost 1 year for my skin to recover because I ate so much ice cream and sugar as well as did not eat properly.
Now that I’m a vegan of 3 years, I consume no dairy and also no longer have problems with cystic acne. My diet was definitely the key factor in my bad, pimple filled skin. I replaced dairy milk with different nut milks (almond, oat, cashew, etc) and noticed an extreme difference in my skin.
The lactose in dairy is also said to be very hard to digest (especially for certain groups/races of people) so I simply avoid it all together.
7. Avoid touching face often
This one is a problem that many people do! Constantly touching your face is a repellant for clear skin. As the day goes on, dust and other particles accumulate on our hands making them extremely dirty. Transferring all those toxins and dirt to the face will clog pores causing pimples. I never unnecessarily touch my face, especially when I’ve had a long day.
The only time I find myself touching my face is when I wake up or before I go to sleep to apply my daily skincare routine. The more I leave my skin alone, the happier it is.
8. Use natural products
Having natural and low ingredient products is a must! I used to buy super expensive products with so many fillers and chemicals that didn’t really do much for my skin. For example: there are lots of popular face masks in big convent stores that have a huge list of chemicals. While they may smell nice and seem to work, all those additives can be very dangerous.
I stick to using natural ingredients when it comes to my face, skin, hair, and overall body. Natural products such as oatmeal, avocados, Aloe vera, sea moss, honey, African Black soap, and shea butter are deeply loved by my skin. The best thing for each individual to do is determine what natural products works best for their skin and incorporate them daily.
9. Wash makeup brushes often
Every time we do our makeup, there is product, sweat, and bacteria built up into the brushes we put on our faces. I don’t wear makeup often so it’s easy to forget to wash brushes however, it needs to be done. Constantly reusing dirty brushes is basically asking for acne and painful pimples. Maintaining clean makeup brushes is a part of good hygiene as well as self care.
I tend to use a natural soap (something I would use on my skin) and get a brush cleaner to make them dry properly. Then I’ll dry them with a hair dryer. There are many products on amazon to properly clean makeup brushes. Grab some makeup brush cleaners here.
10. Stress less
Stress is a huge trigger for pimples and acne, I can speak from experience. when I was moving to another country, I had so much stress that a line of lightly coloured bumps appeared on my forehead. This flare up stayed there for about 2 months due to constant stress!
Instead of allowing my anxiety to overtake me, I take deep breathes and think of a realistic solution. This isn’t only for my mental health but also to help my skin stay clear.
Here are a few stress relieve tips I use to stay calm
- Taking a bath
- Go for a walk
- Set an essential oil diffuser
- Practice yoga and daily meditation
11. Do natural face masks for clear skin
Face masks aren’t only great for self care and taking a break from the fast paced society we live in. Natural face masks are great for hydrating the skin and giving it a rejuvenated look. Even when I’m super busy, I try to do a face mask at least once a week. Something I love to put in homemade face masks is sea moss.
Sea moss is a natural kelp from the sea, made popularised by the Honduran herbal practitioner Dr. Sebi. Out of 102 of the minerals humans need, Sea moss has 92 of them. Its a great addition I love to put in smoothies and juices but it also helps with skin.
Apart from sea moss, there are other great homemade, quick and cheap face masks to make that may assist in spotless skin
Sea moss, turmeric, honey
Turmeric & banana
Lemon juice & avocado
There are so many natural homemade remedies and ingredients that can be used to make quality faces masks but these are a few to start!
12. Get more sleep
There’s a reason why sleeping beauty was given her nickname! Beauty rest is not a corny phrase, having an adamant amount of sleep is so important to clear skin. I’m super prone to dark eyes so when I’m lacking sleep, my underlies are basically purple.
During our resting period of 7-8 hours, blood flow in the body as well as collagen is increased giving our skin proper healing time. If sleep is skipped or lacked, we won’t have enough time for our bodies to heal which may cause puffy eyes, pale skin, or dark under-eyes.
13. Drink enough water for clear skin
I cannot stress the importance of this tip. Many humans are secretly dehydrated and do not consume enough water which shows on their skin. Dehydration can make skin appear as wrinkly and older than a person actually is. Water is my best friend, it helps keep me hydrated, clears my skin, and helps with my overall health. I’ve made it a habit to drink 4 litres aka 1 gallon of water per day. Drinking enough water may help to clear toxins from the body and rid pimples.
Its said the ideal amount of water per day is 8 glasses of water which equates to about 2 litres or 1/2 a gallon of water. The method I used to incorporate more water into my day was bringing a litre of water with me everywhere I go. The Nalgene BPA free is my absolute favourite budget water bottle. Hydroflasks are also a popular water bottle that can keep drinks cold or hot for a very long period of time.
14. Natural face sprays
I feel so fancy when I spray a scented water on my face, but its also great for hydration! Probably one of the most famous rose water sprays is the Mario Badescu for all skin types, but it can also be homemade. To make homemade rose water, all that’s needed is some skin safe rose petals, and water. I’ve even found lavender water spray that is equally as refreshing and smells lovely as well. Just as rose, lavender water can be made with fresh lavender and water.
Do keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different. What personally works for me may not work for others and vice versa. It may be best to try a list of different things and see which one works best!
