A typical and authentic Jamaican breakfast recipe greatly varies from the standard American or Western breakfast. As many know, Jamaican food is bursting with flavor and includes famous spices like jerk and curry. While those foods are all delicious, you may wonder what Jamaicans eat for breakfast?
Yardies have a wide variety of breakfast dishes to enjoy such as porridge, fresh fruit smoothies/juices, ackee and callaloo, boiled food, and hardo bread. For those on the island, a delicious platter of roasted breadfruit, bammy, festival, fried dumpling, and assorted main entrees may go along with those dishes.
Although items such as breadfruit or cassava may be a bit harder to find/make outside of the islands, Jamaicans know how to cook up an authentic and delicious breakfast meal! Rastafarians or people who’ve adopted an ital (vegan) diet do not eat animal products yet are still able to enjoy authentic Jamaican food. Here is a list of my favorite Jamaican breakfast recipes that are authentic, healthy, and fully ital vegan.
Banana fritters- Jamaican Breakfast Recipes
Jamaican banana fritters are ready in under 15 minutes, an authentic recipe, and incredibly delicious. My Jamaican father used to make this for me as a youth and they were one of my absolute favorite recipes to start the day!
Ackee- Jamaican Breakfast Recipes
Ackee is one of Jamaica’s most popular breakfast recipes. It’s the island’s national fruit and is typically served up with saltfish. This Jamaican ackee recipe is fully vegan and free from fish yet still so delicious! Ackee is not eaten on its own and tastes amazing served alongside callaloo, boiled food, or hardo bread.
Boiled dumplings
Boiled dumplings are an absolute staple in Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine. Enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this island staple tastes amazing served next to almost anything. Learn how to make these authentic and easy Jamaican boiled dumplings like a pro!
Steamed Cabbage
Jamaican steamed cabbage is one of my personal favorites. Such a simple, easy dish that is full of deep authentic flavor! When eaten as a Jamaican breakfast recipe, steamed cabbage is typically prepared with salt fish. This recipe includes vegan alternatives that are packed with protein for a traditional flavor.
Plantain Fritters
An absolute delight! Jamaican plantain fritters are not as known as banana fritters or salt fish fritters but are equally (or even more) delicious. With crispy and crunchy edges and soft, fragrant spiced insides, plantain fritters are the perfect Jamaican breakfast recipe.
Green Banana Hash Brown
Not an authentic Caribbean or Jamaican breakfast recipe but it certainly reigns through with island vibes. A unique spin on the American classic, green banana hash browns are a show stopper. Made with simple and minimal ingredients, this low carb recipe is so easy to make and absolutely delicious!
Cornmeal Porridge- Jamaican Breakfast Recipes
Jamaican Cornmeal porridge is an all around win in every sense. Smooth and creamy, perfectly spiced dairy free goodness. If you ask a Jamaican their favorite porridge recipe, cornmeal is likely to be a top answer. One of the most popular and beloved recipes on the blog, you’ve got to make this for breakfast.
Hominy corn porridge
Lesser known by many but absolutely delicious, the texture of Jamaican hominy corn porridge is so welcoming. It’s made with dried corn kernels and honestly can equally be eaten as a dessert as much as a breakfast. If you’re looking for a hearty and filling textured porridge breakfast recipe. This is the one for you.
Oats porridge- Jamaican Breakfast Recipes
Jamaican oats porridge had to be one of my favourites as a child. Differing from regular western oatmeal, this island breakfast is sweetened with vegan condensed milk, filled with warming spices, and loved by kids and adults.
