As a 25 year old woman that has already travelled to 32 countries, 29 of those being completely solo, I’ve seen much of the world on my own. People always talk to me about their fears of solo travel, especially as a woman, and how they could never do what I do. Don’t worry because I’m going to share some of my best solo female travel destinations.
I can’t imagine the amount of incredible life experiences I would have missed out on if I didn’t solo travel. Trekking through Southeast Asia with only a backpack, going on safaris in east Africa, enjoying limonada de cocos in Colombia.
Some of the best experiences of my life have been because of solo female travel. No woman should have to wait for a man to escort her around so she feels safe to travel. We deserve to se the world, sis YOU deserve to see the world!
Today I’m going to share a few countries with good safety reputations (and that I’ve ACTUALLY lived and experienced!) and some safe and the best destinations for solo female travellers!
There are a few countries I’ve been to where safety has been sus and I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. And there are others that I would literally go back to over and over again and rave about to everyone I know!
Down below, I’ve considered some important safety travel tips I always follow when travelling. like, ALWAYS. We’re also going to talk about the countries I adored and where I had little to no safety concerns, let’s get into it!
Safety tip for Solo female Travellers- Solo Female Travel Destinations
Dress and move like a local
When I’m solo traveling , especially when I’m walking the streets alone, I blend in. No expensive jewellery or fancy clothes, never holding my phone out, just blending.
The key to keeping yourself safe is to not bring too much attention to yourself. I practice this in every country I’ve travelled to and it has kept me extremely safe.
Learn the currency & exchange rates
Getting ripped off over and over again is a sucky feeling, especially when you’re travelling on a budget.
Constantly paying in USD makes you stick out like a sore thumb, it’s best to know the exchange rates and pay in local currency.
Don’t tell the truth
Never tell anyone you’re alone, like ever. I’ll never forget when I was coming off the plane in Manila, Philippines and a lady was smiling asking if I had been there before and I was alone.
Suddenly I said I had a best friend waiting to pick me up that was born and raised in Manila. Don’t be overly nice and open with information mama. Your safety comes before people’s feelings.
Make sure someone has your location at all times
Someone at home or someone you trust (host, reception desk, etc) in the country! I always make sure to have my location shared with my best friends and update my people when I’m going off grid for an activity.
Move like you know where you’re going
Even if you’re walking in the complete wrong direction. There have been plenty of times where I miss a wrong turn wand I just kept walking because you never know who may be watching you. This is even great advice for the city you currently live in!
Try not to walk at night
I feel like this is pretty self explanatory. Unless you’re in a reputable country that is known to safely walk at night (like my experience with my roommates in Denmark), don’t do it.
Too many tourists get themselves caught up walking in unlit areas at night. I mean, that doesn’t even sound safe babes.
Regardless of whether a place is a safe solo female travel destination, you still need to be smart. Don’t be cheap, pay the money for the taxi and call it a day (or a night LOL).
Do not carry all your cards and a whole bunch of cash
I have met too many people who were walking (even in safe countries!) with all their credit cards and they lose their wallet. I strive to only carry one card with no more than $30 USD cash at one time.
The safest practice is always to carry minimal cash and cards. You never know if you may lose your wallet and don’t want to be SOL if stuff goes south.
Never post your location in current time
For all my social media baddies, stalkers are very real! I never post things in real time like “On my way to the airport!” or “eating at this restaurant!”.
Safety is your number one priority hun, and people be cray.
Thailand- Solo Female Travel Destinations
Thailand is THAT girl! One of my favorite countries of all time and super affordable, Thailand is known for being a safe destination amongst solo travellers. From flower filled mountains to gorgeous beaches, this country has so much to offer.
Not only did I feel super safe here, Thailand is also extremely affordable making it a budget friendly destination as well. I traveled to Krabi, Phuket, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai and was able to safely explore and felt at home.
Peru
I had a fantastic time in Peru and traveled all throughout the country for two weeks. A country with pretty good infrastructure, incredibly gorgeous nature, and reliable transportation, Peru is a must visit.
One thing I loved about Peru was the amount of veggie options they had, and how vast the bus system was.
Flying was a bit on the pricier side, so I took the sleeper bus every and it was amazing! One of the only times I was able to get a full 8 hours of sleep on a bus and feel ready to explore once I arrived.
Curacao- Solo Female Travel Destinations
If you’re craving the tropical blue waters of the Caribbean but are worries about safety, Curacao is the place for you.
A lot of lists that discuss safe destinations for first time solo female travellers rarely include spots in the Caribbean. No worries because I’m here to change that! I’ve been to countless Caribbean islands and the safest I’ve felt was easily Curacao.
A small island with charming people and an even lovelier culture. I felt quite safe traveling Curacao as a solo female traveller.
I stayed at a hostel in the town centre and met plenty of other solo women, and we made a group, rented a car, and explored the island together! The language spoken here is Papamiento so there were often times with a language barrier, but it didn’t interrupt my safety at all.
Guatemala
Honestly, Guatemala is a country I believe every person should visit at least once in their life. From paddle boarding on a lake crater to watching an active volcano explore, Guatemala was one for the books.
During my time there, I met plenty of young women who were traveling alone for the first time. I stayed in affordable but safe hostels that took my security very serisously. I’ll never forget one of the hostel owners in Antigua who gave me so much advice for my volcano hike and basically looked after me when I came back!
I flew in and immediately got a private shuttle transfer from the city to Antigua. I heard too many stories and many locals recommended tourists to not stay in Guatemala City, so I listened.
When I was traveling to other parts of the country, I did not experience any crazy safety problems and fell in love with the scenery.
Lake Atitlan was such a gorgeous place to experience rich Mayan culture. Climbing Acetenango was an unforgettable experience. Guatemala absolutely checks off for a perfect solo female travel destination.
Portugal
One of may all time favorite countries. Such a vibe from the top of the country to the bottom! I’ve travelled to Lisbon, Porto, all over the Algarve coast, partied at music festivals. Portugal is THE summer destination for solo female travellers.
While English is somewhat spoken, there are still some people who only speak Portuguese. Regardless, I was still able to travel across the country with ease as a solo female traveller. In terms of safety, I always felt quite safe walking by myself, getting on public transport, and checking into new hotels.
There are countless cheap hostels dotted all around the country, and affordable Airbnbs if you want more privacy. Each city I went to, I always found solo travellers to explore with so I was never really alone!
Portugal is such a gorgeous country that is surprisingly affordable for what it offers. I’m talking $5-$10 bus tickets from one part of the country to the next! Well, if you book early enough that is. Green wine (yes, GREEN wine), incredible food, and gorgeous beaches make Portugal a must visit.
Denmark
I only spent a few days in Denmark (I was touring multiple countries in Europe at the time) and a time was had. I stayed in a hostel in a 4 bed female dorm and we all instantly hit it off.
My temporary roommates and I went for a night out, club hopped, and stayed up until 3 am. It was a blast! We were able to walk everywhere at night safely, there were even people biking at 1 am!
The scenery was stunning and I barely took transportation, just walking everywhere and getting my steps in. The hostel I stayed at was huge with over 5 floors and so many opportunities to meet new people. I have to say Denmark is a wonderful solo female travel destination!
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of those places where you instantly fall in love with the scenery. The roads cooperate well with nature, there is lush rainforest everywhere, and I felt safe most of the time I spent in this country.
I wanted this feature especially on this list because of their high English proficiency. I didn’t have to speak Spanish barely at all because everyone I spoke to knew English to some extent.
The only time I felt uneasy was my time in San Juan. I was advised to only stay there overnight after my flight, and that’s exactly what I did. The day after I landed, I boarded a bright and early shuttle to Limon, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there!
People were helpful and friendly, I rented a bike to get around, and the scenery was lovely. One of the days, I went on a bus to get to a national park and felt safe the entire time, even not knowing Spanish too well at that time.
