Vegan condensed milk can be found at health conscious stores such as Whole Foods but it’s nearly $5 for a can. Thats really expensive!
They’re also typically filled with extra preservatives and chemicals that aren’t good for our bodies. Instead of paying for an overpriced item that can be easily made at home, get creative and try something new.
What is condensed milk?
Condensed milk is usually made with cow’s milk and produced through a process of eliminating a high percentage of the liquid content/water in the milk.
Condensed milk is a highly concentrated sweetener and works perfect for adding a creamy sweet flavour. Its typically added to cold (or warm) beverages, porridges like Jamaican Cornmeal porridge, or even pies.
This dairy free condensed milk adds such a delightful taste when added, you won’t think twice about buying cow’s condensed milk again!
What you’ll need
This is probably one of the most simple recipes on the blog. All it takes is 2 ingredients.
I wouldn’t recommend using this specific brand of coconut milk as it does have added thickeners.
- Coconut Milk
- Cane Sugar
Try to chose a coconut milk without added guars or fillers. Homemade coconut milk is great because its in its most natural state.
How to make coconut condensed milk
It’s honestly so simple to make vegan coconut condensed milk. Other than watching the stove for about 30 minutes, there is not much effort required. I like to cozy up with a book or do some online work while watching the stove.
1. Pour the coconut milk with the cane sugar into a small sauce pan and heat until it begins to bubble. Then, turn the stove to low heat.
2. Monitor for the next 30 – 35 minutes (low heat) and stir often so it does not stick or burn. The mixture may have the tendency to boil over even on low heat, try not to let this happen. Do not cover the pot, leave opened.
3. The vegan coconut condensed milk is ready once the mixture has halved in size and thickened. Don’t worry if the milk isn’t as thick when your first turn off the stove. The more it cools, the thicker it gets.
4. Wait until the mixture fully cools to store in an airtight container. Grab a quality airtight container here.
5. Just like that, you’re done! Drizzle in your favorite latte or mix into a delicious Jamaican Cornmeal Porridge, grab the recipe here. This recipe can store well in the fridge for up to one week so enjoy while its fresh (:
How to store coconut condensed milk
Homemade vegan coconut condensed milk can last about one week in the fridge. If you need it for longer, try freezing into an airtight container or ice cubes. It may last for about a month properly stored in the freezer.
